Travelled from Salina Kansas up to Grand Island in Nebraska. We hadn’t booked any RV accomadation as we were not sure how far along the totality line we would get, so we stopped into the Grand Island local tourist information centre.
There we meet a lovely lady who suggested we try the local council/city parks. Most of these sites you cannot book so its first come first served. We started off going through a couple of really small towns of less then 300 people or fewer, and found we could get some free nights. We were heading to Threadford but I decided to make a detour via Stapleton as it was on the map with campsites, and in the centre of totality. We pulled into the RV park and could see the 5 RV sites were taken, and that other people had set up tents around the place. Gordon came over and said if we come around the back of the sites and if we had a lead long enough we could hook into the power! So we ended up doing that and staying in Stapelton for two days. The park had a decent enough play ground so that both boys enjoyed and made lots of new friends. We went to a street party on the first night. It was fairly quiet and only had about 100 or so people there. The music was really good. Mr E scored the drummers stick, however he lost it the next day.
